Cabelas does criminal background checks on every sale in every state by federal law..for your OP to be true either the NICS system is flawed (as it is just no evidence of it effecting this story) or someone at Cabelas broke the law...apparently neither are true in this case.. A gun purchase at Cabelas requires a criminal background check just like every other ffl dealer...so by definition they are not selling to criminals. I'm not a big Cabelas fan either...................they've never refused my CC permit but in the local store in Buda they employ several idiots behind the gun counter! I've been to Cabelas store in upstate PA a couple times, the clerks in the gun section are usually pretty squared away which makes things nice. I Recently bought/ordered via Cabelas On-line A sig P210 and there was no transfer fee when I picked it up. They do, however, charge a hefty transfer fee of $50 if you buy from another supplier and have it sent to Cabelas.
And I don't see how this is a "low risk difficult to trace supply chain for criminals", since every gun purchase made at Cabelas is 100% traceable. Is Cabelas selling guns to criminals? The big difference though is that at Cabelas you can use those gift cards to purchase guns and ammunition.
